Throughout my years as a Member of Congress in the United States House of Representatives, I have witnessed innumerable groups and individuals working for the greater good. From time to time, I come across particularly notable efforts that are sure to stir the hearts of all those who become acquainted with the work. The tradition of Besa, about which you have chosen to educate and illuminate the world, is powerful, meaningful, and ever so appropriate for the current obstacles to peace that we face today.

Your decision to utilize your exceptional talent for photography and the subject matter of Muslim Albanian families who saved Jews during World War II is potent. The image of the human form at home, at work, with children, and with elders are life scenarios with which all members of humankind identify. When we find common ground, our minds are safe and open to limitless possibilities for dialogue, tolerance and change.

The custom of Besa asks that we each take responsibility for each other,  that we be our brother and sister's keeper. In that tradition, we put no individual out of our hearts and do everything we can to keep each other from harm. It is my hope that your work touches innumerable audiences in such a heart-moving manner. May your work be an impetus that inspires people, as you have said, to take some responsibility when there is a knock on the door. Best wishes,
